The students enjoyed the ‘total immersion’, the way that they had to imagine that they were in France, only allowed to talk in French - I think they actually thought you were French!! The look on their faces when they heard you speak English at the end was hilarious. They enjoyed the ‘theatre’ of it, the berets and your outfits, your wild gesticulating and sense of mischief. They liked the props; the ‘gendarmes’, the windows with a French view.. all the details made it feel really authentic and quite special.

The students really enjoyed being able to understand the language and respond. They enjoyed the social element of the visit and the confidence it gave them. Students are more self aware of their language skills, and realise how much they do know. The main thing that students gained was confidence. The courage and confidence to speak and not to be afraid of making mistakes is a big thing at this age. They realised that they could understand what was being said even though it was ALL in French! It made them want to communicate, it was a safe and welcoming learning environment.

Primary experience: The students loved the food and being able to use the French they had been learning in class in a real-life situation. They also really loved playing pétanque, after the breakfast session- it was perfect. They students gained confidence, they showed a great deal of resilience as well. On their feedback questionnaires, they have mentioned that the people there were lovely and the food was really good. The word “délicieux” came back a few times for the croissants and pains au chocolat. I enjoyed the idea of the Chef appearing as the French president ☺. We chose the lunch experience. Students enjoyed the engaging activities and everyone participated in the tasks. Also, everyone loved the food. Our students gained confidence in speaking French in an authentic French environment. Jane and her team were very attentive to each group’s needs and provided differentiated activities to stretch and challenge each student. Our pupils also tried out some authentic French food for the first time and some of the students want to take their parents now to the restaurant!

They absolutely loved it! The staff were very enthusiastic and helpful which made a huge impact on the students. The berets and cut outs were a lovely touch and made eating and drinking their French breakfast a really enjoyable experience. The activities were pitched at the right level for all of our students and the volunteers chosen in each session are still talking about it a few weeks later! I think that this gave our students confidence in their ability not only to have a go at speaking French, but also to mix with other students that they didn’t know while feeling as though they were in a restaurant.

The experience flowed brilliantly from start to finish. It was clearly very well planned. Every moment was used to practise or speak French, it felt like there was no wasted time. The variety of activities was excellent, from the cutlery vocabulary practise to the tarsia game on the table, there was something for everyone. It was wonderful hearing them order their food in French.

They loved the opportunity to speak in French and get rewarded for it. Some students are from families where this kind of food isn’t available, so this was a beautiful experience for them. They gained a belief that they can communicate in French and the experience developed a reason to learn a language.
