What's the story?

Sometimes it is hard to explain what my restaurant experiences are really all about. Many people misunderstand the objective.

So let me explain: it all comes down to the fact that I am a language teacher and I am deeply passionate about what I do. Nearly 10 years ago, I decided to leave the traditional classroom setting because I wasn’t able to teach the way I really wanted to. That was the moment I founded JLH Languages with a very simple vision.

I wanted to bring languages to life for students in a way that was accessible in terms of both distance and budget. I wanted EVERY student to experience the thrill of being abroad—surrounded by a different language, culture, and food—and to feel that amazing sense of achievement when you succeed in making yourself understood.

And that is exactly what I do today, week in and week out. Alongside my team of specialist linguists, we host school groups at our restaurant near Cannock in South Staffordshire or bring the magic directly into schools via our pop-up restaurant on their school site.

And like a lot of simple ideas... it works!

• Students love it because they can practice their language skills in a safe, controlled environment and see that they can communicate effectively—even though the entire experience takes place in the target language.

• Teachers love it because they see their students thrive (often the ones they least expect!) and truly enjoy themselves while learning.

Because I'm a teacher at heart, all the activities and challenges align directly with exam skills. We focus on key structures—building from single words to extended answers across multiple tenses—encouraging spontaneous speaking while providing plenty of scaffolded support so every child succeeds at their own level.

Static posts and bite-sized chunks of information don't always capture the energy, the fun and the sheer silliness of these days. I won't claim these immersive experiences are a magic silver bullet that will instantly transform your exam results, but I do know they change how students feel about language learning.
